@vividlyorphic, 19 – Funded
If you ask her about herself, @vividlyorphic might tell you she’s a “Hispanic gamer with a hot temper” — and that she has a cat named Frida. But her fiery spirit is also what makes this JBL Quantum Grant winner passionate about being a strong representation for other women in gaming and esports.
What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?
I want to create a positive impact and further progress the environment, so these paths are more accessible and comfortable for other women.
How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
It will allow me to upgrade my setup so that I can create an efficient environment for my projects. My main project is streaming because it has the capability of creating a positive impact for the people in my community and this award will allow me to also give back in terms of quality!
What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?
It is inspiring to me as both a woman and an individual. It means that I get the chance to fund my gaming and esports dreams and be guided by resources given through this award. It also fuels me to continue — feeling as if I am carrying on my shoulders all the women who are choosing a similar path. It is life-changing.
Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?
We can create more opportunities like this! Simple workshops that give women soft and technical skills in the gaming/esports industry can also help in the long run. But most importantly, I along with other women already in the industry can help foster the growth simply by being positive role models!
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
Financially, it was difficult to turn this passion into something that I could do on the side. With the help of awards and simple determination, I have made it a possibility.
Mentally, it can be tough when you find yourself facing the toxic side of the gaming and esports industry. There are many people who can discourage me, but it has definitely been a learning battle to push through the negativity and not let those false words get to me. I began to see the challenges as fuel to ignite my end goals.
What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?
Pick out your whys and hold on to them strongly. I think that’s a piece of advice that you can take anywhere. I say this because throughout any industry or goal you pursue, you may face obstacles, but hanging on to your whys — the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing — helps you stay motivated and focused.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I use my “whys.” My whys are the people in my life who I am doing these things for. I also put myself on top of that list because I need to succeed to care for and be there for those whys.
