@unswan, 24 – Funded
“I am looking forward to the opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge and build a network within the esports community,” says unswan. This JBL Quantum Grant works in a tech role and her goal is to expand on that to achieve her dreams in gaming and content creation.
What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?
I would love to one day be able to play professionally or content create full-time. I work in a tech role now — and it would be very cool to translate that into a career field, as well.
How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
The guidance from experienced professionals will be unparalleled in the chance to learn the ins and outs of the gaming industry.
What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?
It means a tremendous amount — personally and professionally. It is amazing to validate and further my journey into the world of esports with a strong foundation of support.
Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?
I’ve had the opportunity of competing in Impact, which was made to assist in the representation of women in gaming and esports. I think consistent support and continuing to promote inclusive spaces while providing support and education will help. Fostering a positive environment for more women to participate in gaming is essential.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
I feel as if the general treatment during ranked games has caused challenge, as it makes playing on my own to improve nearly impossible. I have regularly encountered games where my teammates will throw simply because I am a woman.
What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?
Keep trying. Don’t let toxicity keep you from pushing for your dreams.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
My recent go-to has been just ignoring the outside factors. I focus on myself and don’t worry about anyone else.
