@TopazTvee, 27 – FUNDED

Her name is Topaz — @TopazTvee on Twitch — but most of her friends just call her Topes (it rhymes with hopes!). She’s a “chill, quirky, goofy girl” from the San Francisco Bay Area who loves beanies and laughs. You might even see this BroadcastHER Grant winner “bustin’ a tune or two” while she’s playing her favorite story/campaign RPGs, Apex, and sports games.

What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?

I’d love to host Apex Tournaments or NBA 2K Tournaments and participate in diversity discussion panels.

How will the BroadcastHER Grant from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

It will allow me to make upgrades to my PC as well as help with a new console upgrade to be able to stay competitive in games like Apex and NBA 2K.

What does being the recipient of the BroadcastHER Grant mean to you?

It is the best thing that can happen! I’m so happy to be a part of the initiative to elevate the voices of women in the gaming and broadcast industry. Being a streamer has turned into something more for me than just video games. That’s because, as a marginalized person and a woman, I understand the disadvantages we have in this industry. So I am more than happy to be able to be a positive reflection in the industry for women who look like me.

Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?

I believe it comes down to education, marketing, and not being afraid to call out companies for not providing enough opportunity for women in this industry. Also, organizations like 1DF need to continue to let women know they shouldn’t be afraid to give this industry a try. Anyone can do this and women should never be told otherwise.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

It has been challenging having to learn everything. I was lucky that I did have a little bit of a background in audio, but I truly did not realize how much tech knowledge is needed. But I was able to do research, participate in workshops, and be a part of other encouraging communities, all of which have taught me what I know now.

What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?

Definitely just do it! We all start from somewhere in the very beginning and that’s perfectly okay. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you from trying!

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I stay motivated by knowing that I’m doing this for a purpose. There are people out there who need to see me doing this, so that they know they can do it, as well — despite the disadvantages against us. I want to be one of many to teach people how.
