@taiguurr, 29 – Funded
If you asked variety streamer taiguurr (she/her) what she loves, she might tell you nature and animals, cooking shows, slice of life anime, sci-fi and horror movies, 90s/2000s rom coms, fantasy and dystopian books, skulls, ghosts, and nu metal. But this JBL Quantum Grant winner is also passionate about hosting tournaments for the gaming community!
What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?
My dream in gaming is to create a more inclusive space for competitors. I would love to host tournaments for various games, starting with Apex Legends.
How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
The award will allow me to obtain resources to help me run production for tournaments (i.e. graphics and software). The award will also allow me to provide prizes to winners and participants.
What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?
Being a 1,000 Dreams Fund recipient means a great deal to me. Earlier this year, I had trouble planning an Apex Legends tournament due to not having the resources and support. I decided to cancel because I felt as though I was not prepared. This opportunity will now provide me with the resources to fund numerous tournaments in the gaming scene, especially for women!
Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?
In order to change the underrepresentation of women in gaming and esports, we need to create mores spaces for women to grow as players and creators. Representation matters. Organizations such as 1,000 Dreams Fund provide space for women in gaming to grow.
Spaces for women to learn skills, improve skills, and explore more areas of gaming would be helpful.
Also, remaining vocal about how women are underrepresented keeps people aware. People should be more vocal about seeing more women as casters, analysts, competitors, etc. Starting within our communities and outwardly supporting one another is extremely rewarding.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
In the gaming community, I have faced racism and sexism. It’s extremely disheartening; however, thanks to numerous of women in the space, I learned that experiences such as those should not discourage me from pursuing my dreams.
Another challenge that I have faced is self-doubt. Self-doubt has caused me to be over analytical towards myself and not have the confidence to network and pursue opportunities.
What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?
My advice would be to take action. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Understand that you are unique and your presence is important in the gaming space.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
Knowing that I have a community that supports me and is rooting for me is a huge motivator. Also, having clear goals has helped me stay focused.
