@Sunjxya, 21 – Funded

While Sunjxya (she/her) has faced some challenges in gaming while in college, this JBL Quantum Grant winner hasn’t let these setbacks hold her back. Her incredible community of friends in gaming reminds her why she loves it — and she’s looking forward to a future career in the industry.

What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?

I wish to be a professional esports player or work on events management in esports.

How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

This grant will help me go to esports events and to connect with people in the industry. It will help with travel and ticket expenses.

What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?

It means the world to have someone believe in me and support in my dreams.

Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?

Support each other, advocate for ourselves, and incorporate more women into the industry and create role models who inspire young children.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

I haven’t been able to play in university leagues, simply because they don’t want to play with a female. They just automatically assume I’m not good at the game and have given me fake trial days, so I miss out on actual trials by the supposed captain of the Rainbow Six Siege Team. It’s hard having to just watch on the sidelines as everyone else gets to compete.

What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?

Definitely prioritize connecting with people — whether it be on games, social media, LinkedIn, or on events. It helps build a natural relationship.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

When I make lifelong friends in esports or in gaming, it reminds me why I love it. It motivates me to do my best to have these joyful moments. I also like to focus on my university work to make sure I get into esports and to keep me on track.
