What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?
My goal is to become one of the best female VALORANT players on the scene. I want to become one of the top players and perform on even ground against Tier One VALORANT players; and I also want to cultivate my own content creation.
How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
It will help me achieve my dream of acquiring better gaming hardware to maximize my potential while competing. In addition, it will provide mentorship from my industry idols which will enhance my skillset as an influencer.
What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?
It provides me the opportunity to gain more exposure in the gaming community and, on a larger scale, it serves as encouragement for young female talents to pursue their passion despite harassment and other obstacles.
Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?
We need to increase promotion of women events, tournaments, and professional players. It’s all about bringing women into the light.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
I’ve had to deal with condescending individuals in this industry. I’ve learned that there will always be someone praying for your downfall — and this has been extremely discouraging. Many treat females as inferiors. For example, FPS games are predominantly male. When a female presents herself, she is treated as a joke and misogynist statements get thrown around.
Another challenge I have faced is maintaining my morale and mental health. There have been numerous times where my mental and emotional states were at their lowest due to personal performance in-game. When I was close to giving up my dreams, I was pulled out of that toxic, negative mindset by my close friends. Because of those dark moments, I have learned and grown stronger mentally, though I still struggle with falling back.
What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?
One of the most important traits that you should develop is a thick skin. There will be many unsupportive individuals, but it is crucial to not let other people’s opinions affect you. Negativity will always exist in the gaming industry but ignore it and stay true to yourself. No matter which path you take, you will be tempted to look for a shortcut. But keep working hard and the results will eventually show.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I am competitive by nature. So, one of my main motivations comes from spectating VALORANT tournaments. I get extremely inspired and fired up to become the same level or better than players in the scene.
