What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?
My dream is to make a career in live streaming. I want to be a good influence for all types of people especially people of color and women because I identify with them. I want to pave a way for future women that will join this field.
How will your award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
This grant helps me improve my setup by switching my desk to a stand-up desk. That way I can continually work on my work and not get tired of sitting down.
What does being a recipient mean to you?
It means I am seen and it feels like I am being given a helping hand.
Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and esports. What can we do to change this?
I think people need to uplift women in the space and be more welcoming. I love seeing women uplifting women!! It is the best to see and, if you are a male, please stand up for women!!! A big reason why women don’t talk in mics is because they are afraid a male will talk down to them; be the change!!
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
In streaming, I first struggled to stand up for myself, have boundaries, and not let people in my life tell me to stop pursuing my passion (streaming). I have truly come a long way and I feel the most free I have ever felt in my journey.
What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?
To stay safe!!! Pay for a service to take your information off the internet; don’t show your coffee cups on stream; turn off auto-fill on your web browser; do not open your email on stream; be careful what you post on your stories because people can find you; do not give out your number; make your LinkedIn or any personal social media private; and do not announce the exact location you are going to be at — like a club.
There are so many creeps that women streamers encounter even if you are a small streamer. Take precautions!!
As for streaming, if someone in your chat makes you uncomfortable, chances are everyone in chat is uncomfortable, too, Either DM them to work it out or ban them. This is your safe space. Do not let any person ruin that.
And just start streaming if you have the bare minimum. I started streaming from my laptop and my TV (connected to my PS4) on the floor!! I didn’t have a desk and I shared a room with my grandma. If you want it badly, you will make it happen <3
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I am not always motivated and focused. I wish I was!! Motivation is there and then it dies. So keep a consistent schedule like working out. However, do not pack your schedule because you WILL burn out. Take a break!! With a break, you will be able to come back and make great content. Without a break, you will probably slowly lose your mind and it will show in your content. I take breaks all the time and it helps me to love what I do!!
