Being a part of the New Face of Tech program “encourages me and makes me realize the value in continuing to strive for success in the STEM field, which makes me more determined than ever to focus on my studies and continue my education,” says Shreya Pandey, a freshman double-majoring in electrical and computer engineering and computer science at Rutgers University. She knows all sorts of things can happen when you’re driven to achieve your goals!

What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?

It means that I can do my part by encouraging more women to pursue STEM education, by being an example of one of the many women pursuing and thriving in the pursuit of the technical journey.

Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?

I think the biggest reason women shy away from STEAM is due to the fear of being isolated and the lack of representation. I feel that by placing more women in higher-level positions, we can give emerging STEAMers the courage to continue their journey, knowing that there have been several women above them who have walked on their very path — and succeeded.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

I’ve had my fair share of experiences where I’ve felt overwhelmed by the gender ratio in my STEM courses or extracurricular activities. But at times like these, remembering the extent to which I want to succeed and learn has allowed to me stay focused on my education.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

For the most part, I’ve been fortunate to be a part of communities that encourage the participation of women in STEAM. Interacting with mentors and fellow women in these communities has given me an example to look up to, which has allowed me to stay focused on my goal of becoming a successful engineer.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?

Not only will the funding help me pay for my college and prioritize learning by lessening the financial burden, but being able to share my dream and reflect on my goals through this questionnaire has allowed to me re-evaluate my values and passion for engineering.
