Shaniya S., 17 – Funded

Shaniya S. is a high-school senior, but she’s already thinking about her next steps. This Girl on the Rise wants to study diagnostic medical sonography at one of her dream schools like Fort Valley State University, Albany State University, or Kennesaw State University.

What is something you are most proud of?

I’m proud of how far I have come with graduating high school and not giving up the whole 12 years!

Have you gone through any tough or challenging times? If yes, how did you deal with those challenges?

High school has been one of the toughest times — specifically ninth grade when COVID arrived. But, I managed to finish strong and get through it by keeping a positive attitude and working hard

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?

It means a lot to me because it gives me the opportunity to explore my options with colleges and puts me in a greater position than I once was in  — and this inspires me a lot.

What inspired you to want to be involved with Girls on the Rise?

The impact that the program has on others inspired me, which made me all the more excited!

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals? In other words: Why is the opportunity to visit your prospective colleges important to your journey?

It will give me the financial assistance I need to be successful in my college life and will reduce my financial concerns.

What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?

Fort Valley State University, Albany State University, and Kennesaw State University; they are my top-pick colleges!
