Meet Seun A. (she/her), a 1,000 Dreams Fund Scholarship winner who is studying Integrative Biology at Oregon State University.

What is your dream?

My dream is to earn a Ph.D. and become a professor conducting innovative research in evolutionary genetics, using science to tackle global health challenges like neglected parasitic diseases. I also hope to mentor the next generation of scientists, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.

I feel incredibly honored to be selected for this scholarship, and I truly appreciate 1,000 Dreams Fund for this great privilege.

A quote by Jane Goodall says, “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.” This resonates with me and reaffirms my commitment to advancing research in my area of interest — evolutionary genomics of parasites.

Earlier this year, I had a strong desire to attend a national conference where I hoped to share my research and connect with mentors, scholars, and professionals in my field — people who could help shape my journey toward a career in science and global health. I didn’t allow the fear of rejection to stop me from applying, and I’m so happy to have been selected. This is a testament that — as an individual — I matter, I have a role to play in science, and I am making a difference.

​What advice do you have for other young women who are wanting to pursue their dreams?

Your dream is valid, and trust me, you have the right to dream big. Stay visible and vocal about your goals and take advantage of every opportunity you find. Seek community, believe in the value of your perspective, and remember that your presence in any space you enter matters — even when the world is slow to recognize it.
