Sarah A., 22 – FUNDED

Sarah A. wants to work as a machine learning engineer and eventually become CEO of a startup. This New Face of Tech winner studied at the University of Maryland, majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics as the path to pursue this dream. She knows firsthand how important it is to have a supportive learning environment — especially to encourage more women to literally STEAM ahead in their careers.
What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?
Being the New Face of Tech means being an inspiration for younger girls who would like to pursue careers in tech.
Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?
I think we should continue to encourage and inspire women to pursue careers in STEAM. I also think exposure to STEAM — whether it be in a classroom, through an organization, or internships — makes a big difference.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
A challenge for me when I started out was being afraid to ask for help. It’s important to ask questions and be able to utilize resources in order to be successful. Another challenge for me was navigating perceived bias. In these situations, I have to refocus on what I’m trying to accomplish.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I imagine the end result of my goals. I also think about what I have already overcome in the past and how far I have come — and this gives me a boost to keep going.
How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?
The funding from 1,000 Dreams Fund and Harman will help me attend research and networking conferences across the country. I’m very grateful to receive this funding!
