Samantha, 16 – FUNDED
Out-of-classroom experiences are so important in getting ahead in your dreams, especially in very competitive fields. High school senior Samantha Valentino is using her funding from our #MyDream2017 challenge to attend the exclusive — and expensive — Seventeen Fashion Experience. The Connecticut native looks forward to learning all about the fashion world through this immersive opportunity.
What is your professional dream?
My professional dream is to work in fashion; either at a fashion magazine (Seventeen) or on the business side as a buyer.
How will you use the 1,000 Dreams Fund grant?
I will use the 1,000 Dreams Fund grant towards the $5,000 I need to attend Seventeen Magazine and West Coast Connection 360°’s Seventeen Fashion Experience.
How is this helping you get closer to your dream?
This is helping me get closer to my dream because the program will teach me all about the fashion industry.
What advice do you have for other young women looking to go for their dreams?
My advice is to stop dreaming and start doing. You might think your dreams are far in the future but you can start making them happen today. Keep working towards them and never give up. You will get there eventually.
Any setbacks? How did you get around them?
My biggest setback has definitely been my parents’ divorce. A lot of things have been changing lately and it’s been really hard. I’m lucky to have such an amazing support system behind me; my friends have really been helping me through it.
What’s next for you? What is your next goal?
My main goal currently is to attend the Seventeen Fashion Experience. After that, I plan to finish high school and attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
