Rebecca, 16 – Funded

Rebecca is a student at Jones College Prep. As a junior, she is currently thinking about pursuing the engineering track when she goes to college. One of her biggest goals is to empower herself to get out of poverty by not only attending college, but getting a good job after that!

What is something you are most proud of?

I am very proud that I worked hard to be accepted into Jones, which has selective enrollment here in Chicago.

Have you gone through any tough or challenging times? If yes, how did you deal with those challenges?

Yes, I have gone through challenging times and I am currently experiencing difficulties as I learn to live without my father. I focus on doing my best every day so that, in the near future, my life can be better.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?

I am delighted that I am part of this program, as it inspires me to be the best I can be.

What inspired you to want to be involved with Girls on the Rise?

I am aware that I need all the help I can get so that I can succeed.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals? In other words: Why is the opportunity to visit your prospective colleges important to your journey?

The funds will provide me with the opportunity to visit colleges, ultimately helping me visualize what it would be like attending them.

What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?

I would like to visit Columbia, Georgetown University, and Virginia Tech!
