@pimpermint, 21 – FUNDED

You can call her Sarina or Mint — and while @pimpermint has only been streaming for a short time, the BroadcastHER Grant recipient has been interested in this space for a long time. The problem was that she never saw streamers who looked like her at all. Now, she’s representing and showing the next generation how it’s done — even getting messages from young Black women on TikTok who are asking her for guidance!

What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?

My dream is to make content and friends and create a fun, safe space for others! I want to be myself and show other young women of color that we can and deserve to be here in this space.

How will your award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

The award will be used to help with my streaming equipment and setup.

What does being a recipient mean to you?

I’m unbelievably thankful and happy to have been accepted as a recipient. It means people in this industry believe in me. This is a landmark along my journey as a content creator and encourages me to work harder and continue to reach for my goals!

Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?

We can include women and women of color in events and opportunities. It will go a long way to recognize and respect that women are interested in these things.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

I have to remember to have fun and not overthink. This is a challenge I deal with in general. Specifically, as a content creator, I’ll sometimes discredit my work and wonder what I am doing “wrong” to not be growing as much as my peers. But there is no wrong way to create and you can’t predict what reactions you will get. So, it’s better if you continue to make content that means a lot to you and that you enjoy!

What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?

Just go for it because each time you press that “start streaming” button, the nerves get a little better. Streaming with friends and having those you trust in your chat will also help your space be more comfortable. Having people who make you laugh or support you will sound out negative people who want a reaction from you. Keep your head high and remember to have fun and not stress too much over broadcasting yourself! People are watching you for YOU!

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

It motivates me to think about achieving future goals while also remembering past goals I’ve achieved. I’ve been streaming for seven months — and I could never have predicted the amount of support and success I’ve already had along the way.

Time goes by so fast and sometimes you forget to stop and think about all that has happened and how far you’ve come. For example, I used to have lots of audio issues; I would forget to change my stream category; and I had no clue how lighting works! Now, all of that has changed!

Women of color, mostly young Black women, have messaged me on TikTok asking for tips about streaming while telling me that I helped them consider streaming. I still consider myself a baby streamer, so hearing that motivates me to work even harder, too!
