Phuong, 18 – FUNDED

Law school is most likely on the horizon for Phuong Phan who wants to fight for civil rights.

But, first, this 1,000 Dreams Fund Scholarship recipient will be attending the University of Washington-Seattle to study political science and informatics.

What is your professional dream?

I want to be a civil rights lawyer.

How will you use the 1,000 Dreams Scholarship?

I will use the scholarship to buy additional textbooks for the year.

How is this scholarship helping you get closer to your dream?

This scholarships gives me the financial support that I need to invest more time in my learning as opposed to working to provide for my needs. Further down the road, I will spend more time studying for graduate school entrance exams and the money will enable me to study more.

What advice do you have for other young women who are wanting to pursue their dreams?

Be intentional with your work and never lose sight of your goals!

Have you had any setbacks? How did you move past them?

Yes, in my junior year, two of my uncles passed. Then, in my senior year, my grandpa did, too. During this time. my school was facing the death of a beloved teacher and experiencing racial tensions. From these events, I have learned more effective time management while dealing with emotional setbacks and still taking care of myself.

What’s next for you? What is your next goal?

I will double-major in political science and informatics at the University of Washington, then hopefully attend law school.
