@OMJess – Funded

Whenever she streams, OMJess welcomes people into her “sunshine and shenanigans.” As a full-time content creator on Twitch and Youtube and a variety streamer, this BroadcastHER Grant winner plays whatever she feels like on any given day — you might even catch some random karaoke!

What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?

My dream is to shine a light on Black women and femmes in gaming and esports and make space for creators to be noticed, treated fairly, and paid…ON TIME.

How will your award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

The grant will assist me with making crucial upgrades to my setup. I have big dreams and I need a big rig to get them done!

What does being a recipient mean to you?

I’m coming up on three years of content creation and I just feel… seen… for the first time. This is not the first time I applied, but it’s the first time I feel that I was noticed and that meant more to me than anything.

Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and esports. What can we do to change this?

1DF is doing an amazing job in showcasing unsung talent in gaming, esports, and broadcasting. There is still so much more work to do as women will always seem to have to work three times as hard, especially women of color, to make a break in the industry.

The mentorships, classes, workshops… all of those need to continue and be even bigger and better and even broader — to the point where we are a force to be reckoned with and not just a unicorn that is a rare to find.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

Oh goodness, where do I start? Outside of the fact that nobody told me how expensive things would be, the comments, opinions, and the trolling? Forget about it. I have been called so many hateful things and accused of even worse, just for being a Black woman on the internet. We won’t get into the name calling… however, I can never be bothered honestly. I was raised to let my character speak for me and I hope I make my mama proud with what she taught me.

What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?

Just go for it, honestly. It won’t be perfect. And if you are waiting for everything to be perfect, you’ll never start. Just be yourself, and do your best. You’ll be surprised at the people who will be willing to help you along the way.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

My community (Hi Jem World!) is honestly what keeps me going. Literally everything I do, I do for them and I just want to make them proud. There are many days where I do not want to press the “go live” button, or edit a video, or make a thumbnail… whatever the case may be. I always worry if it will be liked, received well, commented on, and all of that. But the best community in the world sticks beside me, so I will never stop attempting to pay them back or make them proud. Jem World, I Love You! I MEAN IT!
