Meet Olga D. (she/her), a 1,000 Dreams Fund Scholarship winner who is pursuing the Bilingual Teacher Pathway program at Portland State University.

What is your dream?

I dream of becoming a licensed elementary school teacher because I believe I can positively impact the lives of the children I teach. As a substitute teacher, I work with students daily and understand the immense responsibility of shaping their future. When I become a licensed regular teacher at school, I’ll have the opportunity to teach and influence girls’ futures as well.

A teacher is an integral part of a student’s life at school. We play a vital role in shaping a student’s character and forming girls’ characters. We impart academic knowledge and instill patience, love, and ethical and moral values that help girls become better human beings and fulfill their dreams. Teachers are responsible for sharing their educational expertise and guiding my students toward becoming responsible and successful individuals. I will significantly influence my students and inspire them to succeed, overcome challenges, and pursue their passions. The impact of a good teacher can last a lifetime, and their contribution to society cannot be overstated.

I am deeply honored to be the recipient of this scholarship, which is not just financial aid but a significant milestone in my educational journey. Your belief and support in me are truly inspiring, and I want to express my deepest thanks for choosing me.

My passion for teaching has inspired me to pursue a career as a teacher of the Russian program in the Woodburn School District. Despite the challenges I’ve faced as a first-generation immigrant in the U.S., my perseverance has led me to seize various opportunities in this country, including the Bilingual Teacher Pathway program.

Over the past year, I have completed four prerequisite courses with the Academic Recognition honor roll and researched the impact of different teaching methods in math and literacy on young children. Although my research is ongoing, I am excited to see where it will take me.

Thanks to your scholarship, I am one step closer to realizing my dream of becoming a teacher. Your investment in my future is a testament to your belief in me, and I am committed to making the most of this opportunity to contribute positively to the education system.

​What advice do you have for other young women who are wanting to pursue their dreams?

I advise women to pursue their dreams and never give up. Regardless of how cliché it may sound, I firmly believe that unwavering dedication and consistent effort are the fundamental pillars of success. It is crucial to remain focused on the path to success and continue to strive for our goals, even when faced with challenging circumstances and adversity.
