@notC4NARY, 20 – FUNDED

She’s an International Media Entertainment Management student and a Rainbow Six player living in the Netherlands. Melanie, who goes by @notC4NARY on Twitch, believes everyone should dream big — and that’s exactly part of the inspiring message this BroadcastHER Grant winner is sharing.

What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?

As a digital broadcaster I want to inspire those who don’t have a safe space. I want to be someone people feel safe coming to.

How will the BroadcastHER Grant from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

It will help me reach the American side of my community. I’m going to Six Invitational in Canada, where many can finally feel accepted within the gaming community!

What does being the recipient of the BroadcastHER Grant mean to you?

I was totally surprised; a goal that seemed unreal at first became real. It is an honor to be given such an amazing opportunity. Before I applied for the grant, I tweeted “I won’t go to Six Invitational unless a miracle happens :(“. Now that miracle happened, and I’m actually able to go.

Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?

As women, we need to find support in each other. The world is a nasty place, so we should be as respectful as possible and you will be treated with respect, too — disregarding the trolls, of course.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

Many people think girl streamers are fake and that they have it easier than the rest — or that we’re just doing it for the money. Many of those things I still struggle with, but the most important part is to stay true to yourself. Create a community; show the people the real you — who you are.

What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?

Just do it! If you’re afraid, that’s totally understandable, but you don’t have to be. Broadcasting can be as easy as streaming a game, without microphone or webcam. Build your confidence step by step.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

For me, it’s all about the socializing. I hold it deep in my heart. As a LGBTQ+ streamer, I hold the door open for many, and I contribute to the survival guide for future LGBTQ+.
