Mina B., 19 – FUNDED

“Being recognized as a New Face of Tech with so many incredible women is one of the best feelings!” says Mina B. “I can’t wait to see what all of us accomplish with this scholarship and mentorship.” As a Neuroscience major with a Chemistry minor at UNC Chapel Hill, this New Face of Tech winner wants to become an Ob-Gyn.

What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?

It is such an honor to be named a New Face of Tech as a Muslim, hijabi girl. Many American Muslim girls lack role models in the tech field, which is a developing and exciting field. That is why I want to use this scholarship and opportunity to be a role model and inspire others.

This award will help me to expand my knowledge in both healthcare and technology, which are the two fields that I want to connect.

Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?

I believe that increasing role models for women from all backgrounds is extremely important. Thus, I really appreciate the New Face of Tech team’s emphasis on diversity. These awards will not only benefit and inspire the recipients but also many others who will follow their footsteps.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

I moved to the United States when I was 13. My English was broken; I would understand people well, however I would really struggle to put my thoughts into words. It was very frustrating as a successful student to not be able to convey my ideas, ask questions, and be involved in conversations. But, these challenges did not stop me from persevering and being successful.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

Knowing that I will be inspiring others with my success is what makes me keep going.

Also, wanting to make myself, my parents, and my teachers from preschool to university proud is a major motivator for me. These people have done a lot for me and I feel the responsibility to make them happy with my accomplishments.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?

I will use the funds to attend a Muslim Mental Health Conference in California. This conference is related to both my identity and the field that I am studying. It will be a great opportunity to network, learn, and connect with many people in the mental health, psychology, and neuroscience fields.

Moreover, I will also use the funds to buy my textbooks for my classes, which will take away the burden from my shoulders and allow me to focus on my studies.
