Kripa L., 20 – FUNDED
Originally from Chitwan, Nepal, Kripa L. is currently working on her Computer Science major and Data Science minor at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. The New Face of Tech winner, who dreams of becoming a founder and CEO, says that “this win is an important milestone. It has validated what I have done so far and pushed me to keep going further. I am hopeful that this will be an opening door towards finding amazing networks and resources.”
What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?
For me, being the New Face of Tech is an incredible honor that symbolizes not just my personal achievements, but also the commitment of women all around the world to foster diversity in STEAM. I consider this as my opportunity to inspire others, break stereotypes, and drive positive change in the tech industry while representing my community.
Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?
Early exposure and continuous support are key in addressing the underrepresentation of women in STEAM. The introduction of STEAM education from elementary schools, highlighting female role models and the creation of inclusive environments, can significantly shift the balance. Moreover, we must teach young girls to start their passion with courage without focusing on it being perfect.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
Navigating a predominantly male-dominated field has presented numerous hurdles, be it subtle biases or the complete absence of opportunities. Growing up with men as industry leaders always made me question my place as a woman in tech.
People around me fostered similar beliefs, too. I was discouraged from taking a Computer Science class by a teacher in high school and was asked to rather take biology and enter the medical field. I have met numerous shocked faces upon telling people that I can code, or let alone help with something technical. Social prejudices have been a big hurdle, but I am confident that this is bound to change soon enough.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
My motivation stems from a blend of passion for technology, a clear vision of my goals, and an unyielding belief in the impact I can make. I believe in the spirit of lifelong learning, setting achievable milestones, and surrounding myself with peers who are willing to break barriers with me.
Taking simple steps every day — and looking forward to my milestones — keeps me focused and moving towards my goal.
How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?
It will be pivotal in accelerating my path towards achieving my aspirations in women’s health tech. It will provide crucial support in gathering learning resources, creating access to specialized training, and opportunities to network with relevant industry leaders. This funding will serve as an investment in creating a more inclusive landscape within the tech industry by initiating an app that deals with the prenatal and postnatal nutrient requirements of women.
