Kennedy O., 19 – FUNDED

Meet Kennedy O. (she/her), a New Face of Tech winner who is studying neuroscience at Florida Southern College.

What is your dream?

My dream is to give equal representation to marginalized communities in neuroscience research.

By lessening research bias against these communities, I want to help accurately combat the progression of numerous neurodisabilities and disorders that often effect these communities on a larger scale. I also would appreciate if this research aided in healthcare reform since common misconceptions as well as straight-up ignorance towards the mental health of various demographics has been frequently weaponized against them. This is why I want to promote inclusion and equity for these people in need. It’s because no one is immune to mental illness regardless of what some may say.

Please share how you feel about the win and what impact it will have on your career.

I’m honored to be a recipient of this award! It really means a lot to me that others are interested in witnessing the behind the scenes of my passion right as it unfolds. It makes me happy and only further encourages me to make my dreams a reality!

What advice do you have for other women reaching for their dreams?

My advice is to not let uncontrollable events get you down. It’s okay to feel upset when faced with countless rejections and to dislike your current circumstances, but you cannot let that deter you from your goals. It is only when you learn how to self-regulate your emotions after disappointment or an adverse event that you’ll be able to easily bounce back onto the pathway towards your dreams.
