@KaraLynne, 28 – FUNDED
Although @KaraLynne’s American Bulldog, Gus, might occasionally steal the show, she holds her own just fine! This BroadcastHER Grant winner likes to focus on cozy, story-driven games — and some of her faves are Kingdom Hearts, Skyrim, The Witcher 3, and Ni No Kuni as well as The Elder Scrolls Online!
What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?
My dream is to bring compelling, entertaining content to viewers and to introduce others to the fun that comes from gaming and collecting.
How will the BroadcastHER Grant from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
It will help me invest in hardware and software — and also KNOWLEDGE, which is more important than the other two put together.
What does being the recipient of the BroadcastHER Grant mean to you?
It means that I have the ability to invest in myself which is something I typically don’t allow myself to do. It means that I can expand my practice by being able to afford the continuing education and the software that is required alongside it. It means that I can better myself in hopes of helping others.
Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?
We can offer opportunities to help women find the education and support that they typically would have a hard time finding. Commentating is generally a “man’s job” and having more women in the scene has proven to be amazing! Teaching the skills required to successfully gain these jobs will definitely expand the opportunities in other fields in the gaming industry.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
My main challenge was, honestly, myself. I had a very hard time disciplining myself to stay on track with a course or project. It’s easy to say “oh, I can do it later” when it comes to doing this type of work online. Finding the discipline to stay focused was my biggest obstacle but also the biggest learning experience.
What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?
Find what you feel you would be the best fit for. Not everyone has to be on camera to feel that sense of accomplishment. Being behind the camera and being part of the reason a broadcast is going off without any huge issues can be just as rewarding!
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
Realistic and reachable monthly goals with a daily/weekly task list really helps keep you from feeling overwhelmed and helps deter that “burnt out” feeling. Delegate your week and make sure you leave time for YOU. Success is nice, but don’t lose yourself in the process.
