@JourdanKerl, 24 – FUNDED

Digital broadcaster Jourdan Kerl (JourdanKerl) encourages all fellow women with a passion for broadcasting to follow the “Nike” principle — as in, just do it! And while the BroadcastHER Grant recipient knows all about the challenges that invariably come along in the online gaming space, she stays grounded by remembering what’s really important to her at the end of the day.

What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?

I want to become an e-sports desk/stage host.

How will the BroadcastHER Grant from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

It helps me fund my dream because many of the amazing Twitch hosts started out as broadcasters through their personal streams. I’m going to use the funds to upgrade my stream equipment to produce content more regularly.

What does being the recipient of the BroadcastHER Grant mean to you?

It means everything. It further confirmed that I made the right decision to continue my work in broadcast.

Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?

I think that pushing for more female professional gamers is the route.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

Being black and a woman presents its own set of challenges. Not being paid on time as a freelancer has also been a problem I’ve faced.

What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?

Do it! No matter what the industry currently looks like, know that you belong in this space. Women like me are also here to support you.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I always work to improve my craft, but staying faithful and close to my family helps me stay on track.
