Jennifer, 20 – FUNDED

Jennifer Ju doesn’t just want to work in tech she wants to be chief engineer.  Currently a junior at Michigan State University, she’s pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering and hopes to be a chief engineer in the automotive industry. Jennifer is a winner of 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN’s #NewFaceofTech Challenge, a nation-wide search for the next generation of young women in science and arts, and plans to use her $2,000 in funding on tuition.

What is your professional dream?

I would love to be a chief engineer for a division in the automotive industry. I would especially like to be responsible for products related to upcoming technology with driver assistance and human to vehicle interactions.

What does being the #NewFaceofTech mean to you?

I am honored to be a #NewFaceofTech as I hope this will inspire other consider other girls to further their education in science and technology.

Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?

A great way to present more women in STEAM would be to have students exposed to other successful women in their careers in STEAM by either having speakers come to schools/ events or showing short clips of these women showing the kind of amazing work they do. Many of the videos we see of successful start-up owners or people pursuing their careers are of men. Having a role model to look up to will encourage many more girls to consider careers that women are underrepresented in.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

As a engineering student, I started internships and realized how most of my group is male. It has been hard to find a role model that has a similar background to me.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I stay motivated and focused on school. My previous experiences in the workplace have allowed me to see how important my school topics are to be able to work on upcoming technology. The engineers I have worked with that are winning patents and doing amazing work are able to do this due to their educational background.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?

I will use this grant to put towards my tuition to finish up my last two semester of undergrad.
