Jendy R., 21 – FUNDED

Jendy R. loves the Haikyu!! quote: “I am built upon the small things I do every day and the results are no more than a byproduct of that.

This New Face of Tech winner is doing just that, building her future with everyday actions, including her Computer Science and Psychology studies (with a concentration in Human Computer Interaction!) at Stony Brook University, where she is also minoring in Digital Arts.

She dreams of creating fun, easy-to-use tech that makes life better for all kinds of people. “I want to help empower others through thoughtful user experiences,” she says.

What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?

It is an amazing honor. It means I can share my passion with young women and girls coming up in the field. I aim to pass on all the guidance that helped me get to this point. My goal is to lift up other aspiring tech professionals while also nerding out over cool projects!

Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?

We need more visible role models, mentors, and real-world learning programs. Seeing women thrive in STEAM fields inspires girls to say ‘I can do this!’ Hands-on projects show them how fun and empowering STEAM careers can be. I’d would highly recommend empowering programs like Girls Who Code, Rewriting the Code, Kode w/Klossy, and NCWIT <3 which are dedicated to improving representation and community are especially important.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

Figuring out my specific passion within tech was tricky. With so many options, I struggled to focus. But mentors reminded me I’m still early in my journey. Trying different roles has helped me find UX design as my true calling. I’m excited to dive deeper!

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I focus on the future feeling of looking back proudly on all my hard work. Imagining how my experiences today will help me grow keeps me motivated to learn every day.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?

The funding opens up new possibilities for me. I plan to put some of it towards continuing my education, but I also want to explore different career pathways like UX design, project management, and more.

This grant gives me the flexibility to take courses in a few areas that interest me, so I can make an informed decision about which direction is the best fit long-term. With this invaluable support, I can pursue my goals while determining the most fulfilling career path — whether that’s as a designer, PM, engineer, or even something I haven’t discovered yet!

The grant empowers me to keep an open mind as I chart the course for my future in tech.
