Heaven S., 16 – Funded

A junior at HAIS in Houston, Texas, Heaven S. is already thinking about life at her dream college (Florida A&M or Tennessee State University!) and pursuing her bachelor’s degree in aviation. And, this Girl on the Rise has big plans post-graduation, too! She wants to enlist in the U.S. Air Force to become a pilot and an officer.

What is something you are most proud of?

My motivation and determination!

Have you gone through any tough or challenging times? If yes, how did you deal with those challenges?

Passing the TSI reading was something that I feared would be challenging, but I passed my STAAR reading test so I didn’t have to take the TSI.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?

This is my first scholarship, so it is extra-special for me — and it feels good to be selected.

What inspired you to want to be involved with Girls on the Rise?

Honestly, I had never heard of the program until I was nominated for the scholarship. Just being nominated motivated me to get involved.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals? In other words: Why is the opportunity to visit your prospective colleges important to your journey?

It will help me reach my goals by getting to see what colleges have opportunities for upcoming pilots.

What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?

Florida A&M — because Florida has beautiful beaches and weather! The school has a lot of school pride and it’s an HBCU.
