Desi J., 27 – FUNDED

Meet Desi J. (she/her), a Colgate-Palmolive Scholar who is working on a Nursing degree at Chamberlain University’s College of Nursing.

What is your dream?

My dream is to become a nurse practitioner because I want to help people live long, healthy lives and experience all the beauty the world has to offer. I believe that good health is the foundation for everything else — how we enjoy our relationships, our passions, and the simple joys of everyday life.

As a nurse practitioner, I want to be someone who not only provides the best care but also encourages people to take charge of their health, empowering them to make choices that lead to a better quality of life. I want to be there for them through the ups and downs, helping them to stay strong and focused on what truly matters.

I also know that health isn’t just about the body, it’s about the whole person. The world is full of wonder, and I want my patients to feel inspired to live fully — whether that means spending time in nature, connecting with loved ones, or simply enjoying the small moments. Through my work, I hope to help others find the strength to live a life that’s not only longer but richer, healthier, and more fulfilling.

In the process, I’ll be reminded of what a privilege it is to help others, and I’ll be more grateful every day for the chance to experience and share in the beauty of life.

Please share how you feel about the win and what impact it will have on your career.

This quote from George Eliot really reflects how I feel about it: “It is never too late to be who you might have been.”

What advice do you have for other women reaching for their dreams?

You’re capable of achieving whatever you set your heart and mind to. Trust in your vision. There may be moments when doubts occur, but remember that your dream is uniquely yours, and no one else can carry it out like you can. There will always be challenges, but persistence is what turns dreams into reality.

Be patient with yourself. Achieving your dreams is a journey, not a race. Celebrate the small victories along the way and give yourself credit for every step you take. Progress doesn’t always look linear, and sometimes the best growth happens in the moments that feel uncertain. Trust that you’re exactly where you need to be in this moment.

Lastly, embrace your strength — intellectually, emotionally, and physically. Society might try to tell you what you “should” or “shouldn’t” do, but don’t let anyone else define your potential. Your voice, your ideas, and your presence matter. Don’t hesitate to take up space and assert your worth, whether you’re negotiating a job offer, asking for help, or standing up for what you believe in.
