Deja G., 25 – FUNDED

“It’s okay to fail multiple times to get where you want to be,” says Deja G., a New Face of Tech winner. “That’s a part of learning, and I had to realize it along the way.” It’s one of the reasons she also loves the Maya Angelou quote: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

Deja is currently getting her MBA in Business Analytics-Information Systems at The University of Akron in pursuit of her professional dream to work in data analysis and operations at a gaming/technology company.

What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?

It’s overwhelming! This creates a new door of opportunities and goals to learn and accomplish. I’m genuinely excited to receive a mentorship and a scholarship.

Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?

We can create supportive workplace environments and challenge stereotypes to foster diversity in these fields. Businesses need to promote more women to open more opportunities to learn. We must highlight more women in the area and provide more mentorship programs.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

Being underrepresented in a professional environment has been a challenge. It is hard being the only Black woman in the office, trying to fit in the best I can. In the field, there are not many diverse communities around my area, so I have to extend my resources outside my job. I wish there were more opportunities for minority women in the field in local regions.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I stay motivated by talking to my close friends and continuously posting my progress on TikTok. This has helped me stay consistent and focused on my goals. My close friends always cheer me on to continue my passion, and I wouldn’t be this far if it weren’t for them.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?

I aim to purchase a laser cutting machine to perfect neon sign hardware on a device rather than hand work. This will make the process easier and faster along the way. This fund will help me continue working on my passion while studying in school.
