@Celesmeh, 29 – FUNDED

Latina queer scientist @Celesmeh studies gene editing and programs robots for work. But once at home,  this BroadcastHER Grant winner loves to play games while serving up self-care and acceptance in her stream and be an example that it does get better.

What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?

I want to provide a safe place for those who cannot find it in real life and teach them about mental health!

How will the BroadcastHER Grant from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

This will help me update the hardware I use for everyday streaming — allowing me to have fewer technical issues on stream and instead focus on the content.

What does being the recipient of the BroadcastHER Grant mean to you?

Honestly, it’s so meaningful that someone is willing to believe in my dreams and give me the ability to follow them!

Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?

We can help women have access to more opportunities and training and help us learn and connect!

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

As a woman and a woman of color, people tend to form opinions of you before you have a chance to speak. Add in LGBTQ+ and suddenly there’s an even more complex relationship with the world. Sometimes it shows up in the form of trolls online; sometimes it’s in systems that are made for people who aren’t like me, but that I still need to navigate.

What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?

Ask friends to be there — don’t start alone. Focus on your well-being and not the numbers.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I talk to my community. They remind me that what I do is valuable and knowing that they’re getting something from my stream gives me energy and hope.
