“I love the colors, and artistic visions of esports teams and hope to contribute to something similar one day!” says ccuuppp. Here’s what else this gaming- and design-minded JBL Quantum Grant winner had to say.

What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?

I would love to design fun, colorful skins and other visuals for the games I enjoy playing.

How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

As I am currently majoring in human-computer interaction and intend to hone my skills in visual and experience design, the award will help me focus on my design studies. I’ll have more time to devote myself to the work that I want to do in the future and build up a strong portfolio!

What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?

As the daughter of immigrants to the U.S., being a recipient of this grant means a lot. I hope I’ve made my parents proud and have given them a better sense of financial security as I continue pursuing higher education.

Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?

I believe a lot comes down to how gaming is treated between both genders, and how women may have disproportionately less time to play games than men due to societal constructs, norms, and pressures.

While it is difficult to change something so fundamentally ingrained in society at the deepest level, we can start by celebrating the women who have paved the way in the gaming industry and treating emerging talent equitably, rather than tearing them down.

It would also be cool to have representation from all women esports teams in bigger games — for example, Valorant recently put out VCT skins for all the esports teams currently competing, giving each team equal showcase in the shop.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

Besides trying to rank up in Valorant?! Jokes aside, a challenge that I face is speaking up for myself. I work really hard as a designer because I really care about accessibility and the experience of all users, but ironically, I’m really shy and not that good when it comes to my own needs. I’m working on it, though!

What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?

I think a lot of people believe that working in gaming or esports means that you HAVE to be a really good gamer. But the industry needs a lot more than that, so it’s always possible to find your niche as long as you love what gaming is all about!

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

It’s a little old-fashioned, but I carry around a notebook and my favorite pen — I like writing out all the tasks I have swimming around in my head, and then writing the most prominent ones due that day afterward. It helps me clear my head and I love crossing things out when I’m done; it’s a great feeling! And, of course, buying myself a little treat at the end of the week if I do really well always keeps me motivated 😀
