@cathystar, 20 – FUNDED

Yes, @cathystar’s middle name is actually “Star”! This JBL Quantum Grant winner is a full-time student and esports director at UCLA and enjoys cooking, manga, and sleeping!

What is your dream in gaming and/or esports?

My dream is to run competition operations for a major league in esports while creating more opportunities for minorities who are interested in the industry.

How will this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?

It will help me reach my goals by relieving the burden of paying for my university housing as well as other related education costs like books and food.

What does being a 1,000 Dreams Fund – JBL Quantum Grant recipient mean to you?

It means a lot to be awarded this grant by people who recognize that esports is a legitimate industry that can uplift women and other minorities.

Women are underrepresented in gaming and esports. What can we do to change this?

As individuals, it is important to continue to support and uplift the women in our lives. Listen to them, believe them, and be an ally.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

I faced harassment from superiors and sexism from peers.

What advice do you have for women who want to work in the gaming or esports industry?

I advise women to find people who love and support them in their career. You should never be obligated to be around people who put you down — whether in the workplace or in a student club. You have the right to learn and grow and find your path.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I put an emphasis on separating my work life and my private life, which is great for my mental health. The “do or die” grind mindset is unhealthy. I love what I do, but I am a person outside of that, too!
