Brenda L., 22 – FUNDED

Meet Brenda L. (she/her), a New Face of Tech winner who is pursuing a degree in Computer Science at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
What is your dream?
My dream is to become a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and inspire others as a Latina in cybersecurity. I want to help break down barriers and create opportunities for underrepresented communities in tech. Having faced challenges with limited resources and representation, I aim to mentor others and build spaces where they feel supported in their own journeys.
Through my leadership roles in WiCyS (Women in Cybersecurity) UIC and other organizations, I’ve seen the impact that mentorship and access to resources can have on someone’s career. My dream is not just about personal success but also about creating lasting change by empowering future leaders and advocating for diversity in STEM. I want to use my skills and experiences to contribute to a more inclusive and secure tech industry.
Please share how you feel about the win and what impact it will have on your career.
This win is a reminder of how far I’ve come and the possibilities ahead. It fuels my passion for cybersecurity and my mission to empower underrepresented communities in tech. This recognition will open new doors, allowing me to grow as a leader and make a lasting impact in the industry.
What advice do you have for other women reaching for their dreams?
My advice is to stay curious and embrace learning, even when challenges come your way. Mentorship has been a key part of my journey as it connected me with incredible people who guided me and played a big role in helping me secure a role at Microsoft. I’ve also learned the value of giving back by mentoring others.
Don’t hesitate to join organizations that align with your goals, as they’re great for building your network, finding resources, and discovering opportunities. Surround yourself with a supportive community, take consistent steps toward your dreams, and remember that your voice and ideas have the power to create real change.
