@Bearkoda, 23 – FUNDED
Brittany — she goes by @Bearkoda on Twitch — is a full-time variety streamer, where she is mainly focused on good fun and good times. But, the BroadcastHER Grant winner isn’t afraid to discuss the harder topics, too. She prides herself in creating a safe space on her stream, and she’ll tell you that she’s an open book — so ask away!
What is your dream as a digital broadcaster?
I hope to one day be partner on Twitch as a full-time streamer, while making a safe place for people who are survivors of sexual assault and/or deaf.
How will the BroadcastHER Grant from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals?
I’ll be able to upgrade certain aspects of my computer, and from there, I can play more games, and hopefully direct the money I’ve saved to other things — maybe even a charity stream!
What does being the recipient of the BroadcastHER Grant mean to you?
I cried. It means the absolute world to me that you think that I’m worth something this amazing. This is an amazing program and I will not squander it.
Women are underrepresented in gaming, broadcasting, and e-sports. What can we do to change this?
We must encourage women and provide chances for them to be lifted up. If we can get more women into things like the Overwatch League, or professional e-sports, that will encourage other women and younger girls to push to follow their gaming dreams, as well.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
A lot of harassment… I’m a larger woman, and I’ve been accused of being many things that I’m not. I also get told that, since I’m a girl, I need to go back to the kitchen, get off of the healer class, and various other typical harassment.
What advice do you have for women who want to start broadcasting?
Have mods that you trust and know will have your back. Don’t feel pressured if a person donates large amounts, or gifts you a lot of presents, to do anything for them. You will encounter discrimination and harassment, but you are strong and beautiful and you can succeed in this tough world.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I remind myself that I am making a difference and a safe place for people. I have a few consistent regulars that reach out to me and remind me that they wouldn’t be here without me. That is huge — to be the reason that someone is still around. I am awestruck by their love and compassion.
