Ariana, 17 – Funded

There are two things that Ariana, a senior at James Hubert Blake High School in Maryland, is interested in studying: early childhood education and advertising. She has already been a positive role model for the children she educates in child development, church, and internships — and she is passionate about observing and excelling children’s learning and growth.

As for advertising, what interests Ariana is the strategic side — how brands creatively promote their products and educate consumers about them. She also has experience with working in graphic design and she has promoted school events for the Student Government Association and more.

She has exciting options in front of her, and a few of her dream schools include Towson University, Bowie State University, Michigan State University.

What is something you are most proud of?

I am proud of picking myself back up because mental health has had a negative impact on my life. If I didn’t believe in myself to overcome obstacles, I wouldn’t have these opportunities.

Have you gone through any tough or challenging times? If yes, how did you deal with those challenges?

Yes, I mentioned the mental health problems. But, I have found ways to cope with my mental health and manage my time inside and outside of school.

What does it mean to you to be selected as a Girl on the Rise?

I am very honored because it means I have another resource to rely on other than myself. So, that makes Girls on the Rise such an important thing in my life, especially during these hard times.

What inspired you to want to be involved with Girls on the Rise?

This program was introduced to me by Big Brothers Big Sisters. After attending an event sponsored by Girls on the Rise, I desired to continue on with the scholarship.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund help you reach your goals? In other words: Why is the opportunity to visit your prospective colleges important to your journey?

I would have a higher understanding of what the universities and colleges are like. I would also have the opportunity to learn more about myself as a young individual to see how my future is planned.

What schools will you use the funding to visit, and why?

Towson, Bowie State, and Michigan State! These are my top three schools because they are all phenomenal schools that would lead me into different opportunities. On top of that, these three schools would give me a sense of a “home away from home.”
