Angelina X., 18 – FUNDED

Angelina X. knows the power of perseverance. To get a research internship, she reached out to more than 50 professors — and didn’t let rejection derail her dreams. Now, the 1,000 Dreams Fund Scholarship recipient is on her way to MIT to study computer science and biology.

What is your professional dream?

I hope to become a public health leader and biomedical researcher.

How will you use the 1,000 Dreams Scholarship?

I will use the scholarship to fund my research equipment and expenses throughout the school year and summer.

How is this scholarship helping you get closer to your dream?

It will allow me to gain invaluable education and hands-on STEM experience outside of the classroom. This way, I can apply my knowledge moving forward to spur novel advancements in the field of research.

What advice do you have for other young women who are wanting to pursue their dreams?

Don’t let your pre-determined circumstances dictate your life. Carve out your own path and be the trailblazer for others.

Have you had any setbacks? How did you move past them?

To get my first high-school research internship, I cold-emailed more than 50 professors. Despite many rejections or no reply at all, I maintained my dreams and persevered. After all, I only needed one, and the effort paid off.

What’s next for you? What is your next goal?

I hope to explore new STEM paths in college to find the next social issue to combat with technology or science. I also hope to start another service organization that addresses society’s needs.
