Meet Alexis D. (she/her), a Colgate-Palmolive Scholar who is studying dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.

What is your dream?

My dream is to become a compassionate and charismatic orthodontist.

I have aspired to become an orthodontist since seventh grade. I have always desired a career that feels fulfilling — one that would allow me to care for others in a meaningful, lasting way. Orthodontics exceeds this desire, allowing for long-term patient relationships and visible, life-changing transformation.

Orthodontics is where scientific rigor meets creative vision — where understanding craniofacial growth patterns translates into designing smiles that are both functional and aesthetic. Orthodontics demands creativity alongside technical excellence, and I am continuously inspired by it.

First and foremost, this gracious scholarship provides me with another opportunity to give thanks to the Lord for all he has done and will continue to do in my life.

Moreover, this scholarship will have a monumental impact on my career by allowing me to establish professional connections that could lead to mentorship and collaboration, and by providing me with the opportunity to serve those less fortunate than myself. Throughout my career, I intend on ensuring that orthodontic care is less of a privilege and more of an accessible right; this scholarship allows me to take the necessary steps towards achieving this goal.

What advice do you have for other women reaching for their dreams?

Remain resilient and intentional with every action you take to follow your dream. Do not let male-dominated fields intimidate you, and never let anyone make you believe that you are incapable of greatness.

Let your aspirations soar and your inspirations ground you. Surround yourself with a loving, supportive community that will motivate you and remind you of your potential.
