Alexandra F., 22 – FUNDED

“My professional dream is to work in fintech while simultaneously being a role model, advocate, and adviser for females who may lack support but are interested in pursuing STEM,” says Alexandra F.. The New Face of Tech winner is a senior at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she’s majoring in computer science with a minor in data science.
What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?
It means the world to me. I am so beyond humbled to have been selected. This really has given me the push to continue pursuing my dreams fearlessly and to never back down from a career in STEM.
Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?
We need to bring more STEAM-focused courses to girls at a young age. By introducing girls to these concepts earlier and making their learning environments more welcoming and supportive, we can begin to increase the representation of women in STEAM.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
One of the major challenges I’ve faced along the way was losing my father right before I started college. This really created a void and left me distraught. However, I made it a point to enter college with a determined, positive mindset and with the goal to earn a degree in computer science to not only fulfill my own dreams, but I know it would make my dad extremely proud, as well.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I always remember my “WHY.” I’m determined to make an impact and increase the representation of females in STEM. By constantly staying organized and having healthy outlets to relieve stress, I am able to stay determined and to pursue my goals wholeheartedly.
How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?
It will help me reach my goals because it will directly assist with my tuition so that I can earn my computer science degree next semester and, shortly thereafter, dive right into a career in fintech where I can continue giving back.
