Adedolapo A., 19 – FUNDED

As a student at University of North Texas, Adedolapo A. is majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry! This New Face of Tech winner wants to be a biotechnologist.

“This award’s influence on my career provides me with the drive I need to persevere,” she says. “I now feel more responsible for not giving up on my goals because of this!”

What does being the New Face of Tech mean to you?

It is a huge honor for me since it gives me the chance and the support I need to succeed in the field. I am honored to hold this title because I will serve as an example for the next generation of minorities.

I can motivate them by showing that objectives are attainable and that assistance is available to help. This also implies that I have a new task to fulfill to reach the goals I have set for myself.

Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?

This kind of 1DF program increases awareness and encourages women in STEAM. Financial resources and encouragement are typically significant deterrents for people pursuing their objectives. In situations where these are lacking, the proportion of women in particular roles will likely decrease.

Offering additional resources, as well, like guidance from experts in related fields is important. Hearing about the experiences of others who have followed a similar path would, in my opinion, be incredibly enlightening in terms of mistakes and even difficulties encountered along the way.

I think there will be a big increase in the number of women in this field when we support them in this way.

What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?

As a minority pursuing an engineering career, I have encountered discrimination. I’ve had to put in twice as much effort as others on multiple occasions to receive the same level of recognition. I have also had to deal with subpar mentoring.

It is more difficult for me to know what to do next and how to go about it because I haven’t exactly seen people who look like me reach the heights I want to.

How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?

I maintain my motivation by remembering why I initially embarked on this journey. Having been sick frequently as a child, I witnessed the negative effects that inadequate medical facilities had on me. Through my research, I came to understand the significant impact that improved health can have in both altering and saving lives.

Counting the number of lives to be saved is a crucial aspect of my journey, keeping me from slacking off as I ascend to the top.

Observing the dedication and hard work my family has put into my education is another source of motivation for me. It keeps me going strong. I am inspired to complete all of the assignments given to me when I consider the sacrifices made by everyone.

How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?

It will give me the financial support I’ll require for the next semester. It will help me buy the textbooks and necessary lab supplies I’ll need for a productive semester.

I am also eagerly awaiting the mentorship opportunity that will come with the funding. I look forward to receiving guidance on how to take the appropriate steps to help me realize my dream job.
