What is your professional dream?
My professional dream is to become a documentary film producer.
What does being the #NewFaceofTech mean to you?
It is an honor to receive this award from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN. Being the #NewFaceofTech reminds me that my dreams are within reach. I want to make media that matters, and receiving this award helps me get one step closer to attaining my goal.
Women are underrepresented in STEAM. How can we change this?
Exposing girls earlier to possible careers/mentors/hands-on projects could make a difference encouraging girls to pursue STEAM careers. I believe having young women seeing themselves represented in their field of choice is important. We need women to be recognized for their respective work in STEAM so that the next generations know that there is an opportunity for them. Providing young girls with mentorship opportunities is critical for the future of female representation.
What are some of the challenges you have faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced is the cost of tuition to major in my specific field. I have found myself working four jobs the past two summers to support myself while paying off loans and getting media experience. Many internships within my field are unpaid, which can be challenging when trying to gain media experience.
How do you stay motivated and focused on your goals?
I stay motivated because this is my passion. I have had amazing people mentor me, which makes all the difference.
How will funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN help you reach your goals?
This funding will help me to produce my final documentary before graduation. Next year I will be completing my senior thesis and this funding will reduce the burden of cost. My goal is to create films that stimulate conversations, inspire new behavior, offer support and promote change. This funding from the 1,000 Dreams Fund and HARMAN will help me to do this.
