1DF ExpandHER Fund
The 1,000 Dreams Fund’s (1DF) Expand Her Fund offers essential support to accelerate and broaden 1DF’s mission. This mission is to provide exceptional young women with the financial aid, education, and mentorship they need to reach their full potential. As the world and job market continue to change, many dynamic yet under-resourced female college students and early-stage professionals require support to achieve their dreams and goals. Their most pressing needs span social, economic, and educational challenges. Meeting these needs is crucial for empowering this demographic and ensuring their long-term success and well-being, extending beyond financial aid and mentorship.
What distinguishes 1DF’s approach is its steadfast commitment to the idea that every dream is significant, regardless of an individual’s background or origin. 1DF is dedicated to creating a wide array of opportunities across diverse experiences, categories, and industries through three core pillars: funding, education, and mentorship.
FundHER This program offers transformative financial support through a variety of grant initiatives, empowering young women to pursue their educational and career aspirations. By alleviating the financial burdens that often hinder access to higher education and professional development, the program opens doors to opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. Over the past five years, the program has awarded over $2 million in grants to more than 1,000 recipients, covering expenses such as tuition, textbooks, and professional training courses. These grants have not only facilitated access to prestigious universities and specialized training programs but also supported entrepreneurial ventures, with over 100 recipients successfully launching their own businesses.
The impact of these grants extends beyond mere financial assistance. Recipients have reported a significant increase in their confidence and motivation, with 90% stating that the grants were pivotal in achieving their goals. Furthermore, the program boasts an impressive success rate, with 85% of grant recipients graduating from their educational programs and 70% securing employment in their desired fields within six months of graduation. By providing this life-changing financial support, the program is not only helping young women to realize their dreams but also contributing to the creation of a more equitable and inclusive society.
MentorHER
MentorHER arranges numerous one-on-one mentorship sessions, linking beneficiaries with industry leaders who serve as guiding lights to demystify higher education and business. These mentorship opportunities provide invaluable guidance and insights, helping young women navigate their chosen fields and envision a clearer future.
HireHER
This initiative focuses on providing hands-on, experiential opportunities for beneficiaries, aiming to place participants into roles with 1DF’s partner organizations. By immersing young women in real-world environments, it offers them practical experience and potential career pathways. Over the past year, 1DF has successfully partnered with over 50 organizations, securing placements for more than 200 participants. These roles span various industries, including technology, finance, healthcare, and the arts, ensuring a diverse range of experiences that cater to different career aspirations. Participants have reported a 95% satisfaction rate with their placements, highlighting the program’s effectiveness in bridging the gap between education and professional development. By providing these opportunities, the initiative not only enhances the beneficiaries’ resumes but also equips them with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in their chosen fields.
Key findings highlighting the need for our work include:
- Young women, many from low-income communities, encounter significant obstacles to success, including the lack of family support, lack of self esteem, food security, funds for living expenses, and educational resources. Financial constraints often prevent many from completing their education. Additionally, the absence of aspirational role models hinders their ability to rise above their family circumstances and pursue higher education, career and technical education (CTE), and ambitious professional roles. Many also lack access to quality jobs, vocational training, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Current Impact across 1DF Core Pillars:
- Mentorship Seeking: A remarkable 70% of participants actively seek mentors to inspire and guide their future aspirations, highlighting the program’s crucial role in fostering meaningful mentor-mentee relationships.
- Boosted Confidence and Decision-Making: An impressive 75% of our participants report heightened confidence and improved decision-making skills, attributing these positive changes to the comprehensive support and resources provided by 1DF.
- Sense of Belonging: Through involvement in extracurricular activities and connection with a network of like-minded peers, 80% of participants feel a greater sense of belonging. This community aspect of 1DF ensures that participants are supported and encouraged on their journey.
- Enhanced Mental Health and Well-Being: A significant 77% of participants have experienced improved mental health and well-being, expressing relief and gratitude for the holistic support provided by 1DF in terms of funding, education, and mentorship. This underscores the transformative impact of our program on participants’ overall quality of life.
To understand and measure our impact, 1DF employs various tools, including:
Annual Beneficiary Surveys: Our comprehensive surveys gather direct feedback from participants, featuring both closed- and open-ended questions. These insights help us measure program impact, understand participants’ experiences, and evaluate the overall value of their involvement.
Formal Observations: We conduct real-time observations of our mentorship programs, allowing us to witness the dynamic interactions and immediate effects on participants. This hands-on approach ensures we capture authentic moments and can make timely improvements.
Anecdotal Feedback: We value the power of stories and informal exchanges. During events like round-table conversations, summits, and other gatherings—whether virtual or in-person—we engage in meaningful dialogues with students and mentors. These casual discussions often reveal rich, qualitative insights that formal methods might miss, providing a fuller picture of the program’s impact.
